Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Performer, Public Speaker, Activist, Community Engager

I have a passion for using music as a tool for connection and change. Through my work, I aim to tell stories, raise awareness on mental health, and create meaningful spaces for conversation and community.

I’m Melissa James, and my journey as a singer, songwriter, and performer has always been driven by the belief that music has the power to connect us all. Growing up in North West London, I was deeply influenced by the soulful sounds and calypso rhythms that surrounded me, and it wasn’t long before I found myself drawn to music’s emotional depth. My journey took me from Sussex University, where I discovered blues legends like Bessie Smith, to Paris, where I found my artistic voice performing in small bars with talented musicians.

When I returned to London, I embraced my calling to write songs and share my own stories. With the encouragement of my singing teacher, I began collaborating with Ross Lorraine, and together, we’ve created music that resonates with me deeply and, I hope, with others as well. My debut album Day Dawns was a reflection of my love for soulful storytelling, blending original songs with classic interpretations.

One of the most personal projects I’ve worked on is Stripped Back, an album that laid bare my emotions with simple arrangements of voice, piano, and guitar. This album offered a raw, intimate look at my personal journey, and I felt it was important to share those vulnerable moments with my listeners. Alongside my music, I’ve always been passionate about using my platform to raise awareness around mental health. In 2016, I launched Sing for Sane, an initiative that uses music to combat the stigma around mental health, with proceeds from the charity single “Live Again” supporting SANE.

In addition to my music, I’ve explored various other creative avenues, from organising charity events like Gig in a Gallery to starting Stronger on Sundays, an online platform for important conversations around racism and social justice. I believe in the power of art to bring people together and spark meaningful change.

Whether I’m on stage, in the studio, or leading a workshop, my goal is always the same: to connect with others and make a difference, one song at a time.
