Meet Margaret Wesseling.
Margaret Wesseling is a renowned theatre writer, playwright, performer, and translator currently based in Athens.
In our interview, we explored her fantasy cultural year. Expect surprises, anecdotes and laughs.
Margaret's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, where she graduated summa cum laude. She then pursued a Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University.
Margaret's passion for medieval studies took her to the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, where she studied medieval textuality on a Fulbright grant.
Training and Early Career
Margaret's early career was marked by extensive training in theatrical performance and improvisation in Los Angeles from 1995 to 1997. She further honed her skills in theatrical writing by attending seminars in Athens from 2015 onwards. During this period, she participated in numerous dramatic readings and performances across Boston, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Athens.
Writing and Performance
Margaret has made significant contributions to the world of theatre and literature.
She has written nine plays and two books of poetry, in addition to numerous articles in both Greek and English.
Her works often explore themes of change and movement, reflecting her interest in how individuals and societies transform across political, economic, and personal borders.
Notable Works and Collaborations
Voices of our Ancestors (1998) - This play was a collaborative project produced and directed in Los Angeles with formerly homeless individuals at Glaxa Studios.
Sparrow on the Housetop (2018-2019) - This play was published by Egokeros in November 2019 and performed in Greek at the Athens Suitcase Festival in September 2018, and later at Beep Theatre in Athens from November to December 2019.
Something Missing (2022) - Performed at K.O.T.E.S. Theater in Athens in the spring of 2022 and at Fournos Theater in the fall of 2022. It was also produced as a radio play by the Willits Community Theatre and Performing Arts Center in California in June 2022.
The Crack (2023) - Produced and performed with Joëlle Montech in Athens in June 2023 and on Aegina in August 2023.
Margaret has also collaborated with the writer's group Scene+, alongside dramaturge Andreas Flourakis, to perform several textual performances of her writings.
Publications and Availability
Margaret's poems, articles, and synopses of her plays can be found on her website, m2write.com. Her book of poems, "What She Said," is available on Amazon, and "Sparrow on the Housetop" can be purchased at the Politeia Bookstore in Athens. The Greek version of her play "They're Digging a Tunnel" is available at play-ground.gr.
Current Projects and Interests
Margaret continues to engage with her audience through various platforms. She is currently working on translating her English-language plays for Greek audiences and exploring a series of animal-centric monologues that delve into the human-animal divide. She has expressed a keen interest in non-verbal art forms such as modern dance, visual art, and architecture, particularly medieval structures like Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, England.
Future Aspirations
Margaret's future plans include cultural travels, with a specific interest in exploring the arts and culture of the south of France. She also looks forward to engaging in new projects that bridge cultural and linguistic divides, continuing to inspire and connect with audiences worldwide.

She sees these as fundamental aspects of human experience, often driven by our actions and circumstances.
