Meet David Bixler (Saxophonist, composer, and teacher of Jazz)
David Bixler, a creative force in jazz, has spent decades weaving melody, intellect, and soul into his work as a saxophonist, composer, and educator. With a career as layered as his compositions, David’s journey is a vivid tapestry of artistic ambition, resilience, and devotion to his craft.
The Education of a Jazz Artisan
David's early immersion into jazz began at Indiana University Bloomington, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies (1982-1987). There, he developed a foundational relationship with music that would propel him into the professional world.
Fast-forward two decades, and he found himself back in academia, this time earning a Master's degree in Music Theory and Composition from Montclair State University (2005-2007). These bookends of formal education frame his lifelong pursuit of musical mastery and innovation.
The Performer: Big Bands and Beyond
After landing in New York City, David didn’t just step onto the scene—he leapt. Touring with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Toshiko Akiyoshi, he honed his work on the global stage.
Later, as a member of the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Big Band, David became a Sunday night fixture at Birdland, earning a Latin GRAMMY for their album Final Night at Birdland. His artistry flourished amidst these experiences, defining his voice and leaving a mark on the world of jazz.
The Composer: Music Meets Meaning
David’s compositions are not mere notes on a page—they are reflections of his life’s journey, including its challenges. A 12-year period navigating his son’s health challenges reshaped his understanding of music’s role in his life.
Out of this crucible emerged poignant works like In the Face of Chaos (2019), Blended Lineage (2020), and Inside the Grief (2020). His recent project, The Langston Hughes Project Vol. 1, channels the genius of Hughes’ poetry, earning acclaim for its emotional depth and inventiveness.
The Educator: Shaping the Next Generation
For over 16 years, David has been a professor at Bowling Green State University, where he now serves as Director of Jazz Studies. From managing the department to mentoring budding jazz talents, David’s influence as an educator rivals his accomplishments as a performer.
His ability to inspire extends beyond the classroom as he travels the world as a Selmer and Vandoren Artist, sharing his expertise through clinics and performances.
The Instigator: Always Creating
As the leader of Bixxlixx Music, David has spent over 38 years juggling the roles of performer, composer, and entrepreneur. Whether leading the David Bixler Quintet or collaborating on the genre-defying Auction Project, his artistic energy remains boundless.
The Podcaster: Liner Notes and Life Stories
In his podcast Liner Notes, he delves into the lives of fellow jazz musicians, exploring their creative processes and personal journeys. These conversations are as insightful as his compositions, offering a glimpse into the soul of the jazz community.
A Life Lived in Harmony
David and his family call New York City home, where the rhythm of life mirrors the vibrancy of his music. A self-described sixth-grade dreamer, David followed his creative instincts down a path lined with challenges, triumphs, and soulful expression.
From Birdland to Bowling Green, from composing to podcasting, David Bixler remains a true artist: curious, committed, and continually inspired by the possibilities of music.

Crafted during a vibrant conversation with Mark, David Bixler's journey unfolds as a rich tapestry of jazz exploration, cultural immersion, and imaginative storytelling.
Here's a glimpse into the interview:
Starting Point: David Bixler's Jazz Journey and Fantasy Trip
Mark introduced David Bixler, a jazz saxophonist and educator, to the Arts and Culture Network. David, who also hosts the podcast "Liner Notes," was welcomed as a new full member.
The conversation transitioned into a whimsical fantasy where Mark planned a cultural year trip for David, starting with a question about his favourite building. David shared his passion for the traditional Irish flute and his fascination with the creative processes and output of jazz musicians.
Baseball, Cricket, and Book Preferences
The conversation expanded to include sports and literature. Mark and David discussed baseball, cricket, and a hypothetical scenario set at Wrigley Field. Their preferences revealed a shared appreciation for storytelling, with David expressing a fondness for the Book of Psalms and a preference for a heavy red wine like Malbec. The discussion concluded with a vivid image of David enjoying a glass of Malbec and the Book of Psalms at a cafe outside Wrigley Field.

Exploring Music Education Research Opportunities
Mark and David explored the possibility of a fantasy year-long research study focusing on music education, with an emphasis on jazz and roots music.
Sponsored by a wealthy Chicago-based family foundation, the study would immerse David in traditional Irish music during a year-long stay in Ireland.
The foundation’s support extended to covering all expenses, facilitating a lecture tour, and securing a book deal. However, a unique condition required David to limit his musical listening to traditional Irish music during the study, adding an intriguing layer to the opportunity.
Dublin Trip Preferences and Activities Discussion
Mark and David envisioned a hypothetical trip to Dublin, filled with diverse cultural activities. Suggestions included attending a tap dancing performance, dining at a French-Irish fusion restaurant, and experiencing a hurling match. David expressed a keen interest in learning more about hurling and exploring Monet’s garden through a virtual reality exhibit.
Cultural Event Preferences and Choices
The duo curated a week-long cultural itinerary, blending their preferences for various art forms. David selected a jazz gig with John Coltrane, an Oscar Wilde play, the Broadway musical "In the Heights," and a Handel opera. Their shared excitement underscored their enthusiasm for these enriching experiences.
Exploring Movies, Music, and Hypothetical Scenarios
Mark and David delved into discussions about movies and music, touching on the film "Memento" and a unique nine-hour version of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. They also entertained a whimsical scenario involving Jesus and a homeless cat invited for lunch. Reflecting on a day off in Dublin, David expressed a desire to explore the city on foot, soaking in its architecture, landscape, and coffee culture.
