Meet Abe Max.
Hi, I’m Mark Walmsley, founder of The Arts and Culture Network. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Abram Max wood sculptor at Beauty Seed Studios, a full member of our network.
In Abe's own words ...
There was a time when I had no paintbrushes, wood saws, and piles of hammers… but that ended just after I stood up.
Now, I've been walking with iteration and implementing artistic endeavours for over 45 years. A life of creative flow in stride and song.
I reside with my creative partner and wife in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Abe and I delved into his passion for woodworking, his unique approach to art, and we explored his fantasy cultural year exploring wood art in Poland. We also shared our personal interests and favourite books and had a candid discussion about the presence of 'bullshit' in our work.
Abe recently graduated from the Enlisted Mindset Coaching program, and he shared his plans for workshops and a tabletop role-playing game coaching methodology.
During the interview, Abe shared his deep passion for woodworking, inspired by his relationship with local mill owner Rod Jacobs. His approach centres on discovering the inherent beauty in wood rather than merely optimising output.
Abe collaborates with the Association of Violin Makers of America and the Coquille tribe to promote and preserve hardwoods. Through his partnership with Jacobs, Abram has received exquisite pieces of figured maple and other hardwoods.
Abe showcased a unique piece of art created from an old hardwood tree that naturally formed an elephant shape. He highlighted the beauty of spalting, a type of mold growth that occurs when a tree dies from the inside out, emphasising his collaboration with nature to reveal the tree’s essence. I was deeply impressed by the piece’s striking appearance and the story it told.
We discussed Abe’s work and future plans, including his focus on helping artists develop healthier relationships with their lives and work through mindset coaching. Abe’s accessible and reasonably priced artwork has received positive feedback, including commissions and festival recognitions.
Abe recounted a touching story about surprising his wife with a 300-pound watercolour paper art piece, which moved her to tears. I encouraged viewers to explore more of Abram’s work on his website and praised the simplicity and value of his art process. We then engaged in imaginative storytelling, starting with Abram’s favourite building, the Chrysler Building in New York City.
We shared our personal interests and discussed impactful books. Abram spoke about Jung’s Red Book, which explores the author’s psychology through dreamwork. We also talked about our love for coffee and dogs, particularly Abram’s multi-poo, a favourite among children.
We humorously discussed the presence of 'bullshit' in our work, sharing anecdotes about typographical errors and professional mishaps.
Abe and I discussed his upcoming fantasy year in Poland, exploring wood art and reuniting with family. He chose classical music, particularly Bach and Vivaldi, for his travels. Upon arrival in Krakow, he would be greeted by relatives and immersed in various cultural experiences.
We talked about Abe’s preferences for dance performances, particularly Asian and Pacific styles. He also shared his love for live tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. We discussed arranging a performance and his ideal birthday dinner, including a grass-fed ribeye or high-end ramen.
I introduced a virtual digital art gallery offering immersive VR experiences with famous artworks. Abe expressed his admiration for an obscure painting, August Hay, and we discussed its details and techniques.
Abe shared his recent graduation from the Enlisted Mindset Coaching program and his plans to incorporate this knowledge into workshops and a tabletop role-playing game coaching methodology. He is building his coaching clientele via his website, Beauty Seed Studios.
We discussed creating a profile about Abram’s work to be published on various platforms. Abram expressed his appreciation and suggested I appear on his podcast, which I agreed to, hinting at some interesting stories to share.
Thank you, Abe, for an inspiring conversation. I look forward to collaborating and sharing your incredible journey with the Arts and Culture Network.
